- Sunday 5th July 2015
On the last day of the trip my flight was in the evening leaving me with plenty of time to kill. I decided to spend some time checking out Sofia Land.
Sofia Land was Bulgaria's first full-size theme park. Construction of the main building began in July 2001 and the park opened to the public on 21 September 2002. Sofia Land featured four extreme rides, eight children's rides and eleven family rides and attractions, along with the usual shops and restaurants.
In September 2006 it was announced that the park would shut down and the owners First Investment Bank would sell it, with a loss of jobs for nearly 550 people. The park was officially closed down on October 16th of the same year.
The park is a fifteen-minute walk from the nearest metro station. I was not allowed inside and was told to come back tomorrow as the boss was not there. Unable to return, I just took some photos from outside the park for this report. The park still looks to be in decent condition even though it's been closed for many years now. The two coasters that opened with the park are now in other parks around the world: the Wacky Worm coaster is at Dreamland (Margate, UK), while the Wild Mouse is now at Suroboyo Carnival Night Market, Indonesia.
The info board outside the park had a map on it.
